print linoleum craft kit: senior thesis

PRINT is crafting kit which teaches users how to create linocut prints at home. The kit comes packaged in a box that includes all the necessary tools and materials, as well as an instruction manual with step by step explanations as well as illustrations and diagrams of the process. It is simple and easy to follow along with, making this artform more accessible to hobbyists and beginners, or anyone starting out without access to a studio.

Instruction Manual

The instruction manual is accordion fold which allows the spreads to interact in interesting ways. I divided the steps out into three sections, separated by different colors so that they're easy to navigate through, with each step of the process numbered. Section 1: Tools, identifies all the tools with illustrations, and how to properly use and care for them. Section 2: Designing and Carving, explains the designing and carving process, from sketching through carving. Section 3: Printing, explains the printmaking process, from set up through clean up. I wrote all of these instructions myself, based on the steps I take when I'm making a linocut print, and illustrated all of the diagrams and tool illustrations.

Demo videos can be accessed by QR codes throughout the manual.

branding elements

The Illustration style for that I developed for this kit, emulates texture and quality of my own linocut works. The illustrations are playful and wonkie, they're not perfect, and this adds to the friendly nature of this kit. The typefaces were inspired by woodblock type so they're a little bit blocky a little bit wonky, tying back into the playfulness of this kit. The complimentary color pallet provides contrast and opportunity for interesting layering of different colors.
